Word of the Week: Fitness

Physical fitness is a huge part of becoming a black belt. In classes this week, we are discussing ways to develop a strong and healthy body.

  • Eat healthy foods Choosing good food is a critical part of physical fitness. Without proper nutrition, athletes will never achieve peak performance. Fruits and vegetables should be your first choice! Limiting processed foods and sugars is important. Specific dietary choices should be made in consultation with a physician, but returning to your basic, whole foods is a good place to start!

  • Water Drinking enough water is critical for your physical fitness. When you lack water, your body can't operate efficiently. The current recommendation is 11.5 cups/day for women, 15.5 cups/day for men. Drinking enough water will also increase your energy level and brain function!

  • Sleep Often overlooked in relation to fitness, sleep is a critical part of a strong and healthy body. This chart from the CDC shows how much sleep is necessary for different ages:

  • Exercise The amount that you should exercise depends on your goals, but the most important factor is consistency. Exercising infrequently - no matter the duration - will be less effective than regular exercise. Taekwondo classes are an excellent form of exercise! But if you're only working out twice a week in class, it's not enough. Students who plan on competing will require a lot more conditioning to perform at their best.

At Grand Valley Taekwondo, we are each pushing ourselves to become our best selves. That looks different for each person! Taekwondo is an individual sport and we're each moving at our own pace. But my challenge to each student is to set a goal - pick one element of physical fitness that you can improve, and strive for that goal. One step at a time, we will grow stronger!
